[NEWS] Episcopal Relief & Development Responding to Volcano Eruption in Hawaii

Episcopal Relief & Development (https://www.episcopalrelief.org/) is partnering with the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii (http://www.episcopalhawaii.org/) and Church of the Holy Apostles in Hilo to provide emergency assistance after the Kilauea volcano first erupted on Hawaii’s Big Island on May 3. Lava flows from the volcano wiped out hundreds of homes. Thousands were forced to evacuate, including some members of Church of the Holy Apostles which is located about a half-hour north of the evacuation zone.

An eruption at Kilauea summit jolted the area on Wednesday, June 6 with the force of a 5.4 magnitude earthquake. Episcopal Relief & Development’s support is providing laundry services for evacuees staying in emergency shelters and nine air purifiers for schools in impacted areas. Air quality in the Puna District has worsened due to sulfur dioxide from the eruption. Local authorities have been distributing masks to shield from the ash, but the masks do not protect against vapors and gases. As a result, air purifiers are needed, especially in schools.

[NEWS] The Quintessential Feature of Indian Urbanism

In the form of activities and material presence – is an essential feature of urbanism in India and the global South in general. Informality in the urban context can be understood from multiple frames as spatial categorization (slum), socio-economic groups (informalized labor), forms of organization (rule-based/relation-based) and knowledge and practices. The urban experience is brought about with the coming together of formal and informal spaces, and activities as witnessed in street economies across urban India. In other Asian cities like the overcrowded streets in the Mongkok district of Hong Kong provides a counter narrative to the criticism of overcrowded streets and markets:  they serve as hangouts for the locals, symbolize the chaos and unplanned spatiality of the Asiatic exoticism that appeals to foreign tourists. Every corner of the inner- city area of Mongkok is filled with traffic, shoppers, passer-by, strollers, locals and visitors from other places. Temporal changes brought about by changes in the street from varied uses – pen air bazaar, vehicles, unpredictable mixing of new and old, shops, roadside eateries add to the vibrancy and vitality of street life and help in place making.

Allocations for education and health in the proposed budget rose by 5.2 percent and 13.2 percent respectively from the outgoing fiscal year’s. Experts say that allocations for these two sectors should increase by around 25 and 20 percent, respectively, to help achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In fact, Bangladesh should invest more in education if it wants to change its future and achieve the goals set in the National Education Policy 2010 and Vision 2021, and also invest in the universal health coverage for everyone.

[NEWS]Meeting Paris Climate Targets will Require a Substantial Reallocation of Global Investment

The authors find that a fundamental transformation of the global energy system can be achieved with a comparatively modest increase in overall investments. However, a radical shift of investments away from fossil fuels and toward renewables and energy efficiency is needed, including dedicated investments into measures to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As part of the Paris Agreement in 2015, many countries defined Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) designed to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The study confirms that current incentives like the NDCs will not provide sufficient impetus for the “pronounced change” in investment portfolios that are needed to transform the energy system.

[NEWS] Here’s How IKEA has Committed To Becoming A “Climate Positive” Company By 2030

When it comes to materials, plastic has quickly become both a “life-saving miracle product and the scourge of the Earth,” as National Geographic puts it. Like, if you asked me to name all the plastic products I use in a day to win $1 million dollars, I’d lose the money. That being said, the harmful effects plastic has on the environment are even more horrifying than that Nicolas Cage pillow on Etsy. With a recycling rate of just 9% in the United States, many companies are cutting back their use of plastic — and now you can add IKEA to the list.
