[NEWS] ECA Supports Member Countries for Faster SDG Implementation in North Africa

The ECA Office for North Africa will organise on 26-27 June in Rabat, Morocco a sub-regional meeting on SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) implementation in North Africa.

This meeting aims to assess the progress made, existing challenges, good practices and lessons learned regarding the implementation of SDGs in North Africa. This event will take place with the participation of North African institutions in charge of SDG steering and review (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia), delegates from the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) General Secretariat, UN agencies and several regional & international development organisations.

[NEWS] More Counties To Take Part In UN’s SDGs Schools’ Programme

Hundred (100) new schools have enrolled for Phase IV of the Schools Green Initiative Challenge in the semi-arid counties namely; Embu, Kitui and Machakos as Phase II winners, Thua Primary school, toured Mombasa as part of their reward in leading 120 schools in the tree planting competition.

The Green Initiative Challenge (GIC) is sponsored by Bamburi Cement Ltd, KenGen Foundation and Better Globe Forestry has over 300 primary and secondary schools and hundreds of students participating in the competition with the aim of mitigating climate change as well as providing sustainable woodfuel and alternative income opportunities for the local communities.

In its fourth phase, 100 new GIC schools will compete in nurturing drought resistant Terminalia brownie, Senna siamea and Melia volkensi tree species in 0.5 acre plots at their institutions. The project aims at greening over 500 acres of the semi-arid counties of Embu, Kitui, and Machakos.

[NEWS] Youths Crucial Component In Achieving SDG’s — UNILAG Registrar

Ipaye made the assertion at the 13th Graduation Valedictory of the (NTIC), Ogun Chapter on Saturday.

She said that the career choices made by Nigerian youths had the considerable effect on the impact they make in actualising some of the SDGs.

[NEWS] UAE Space Agency Aiding UN Development Goals, Conference Hears

The UNISPACE +50 Conference in Vienna heard this week how the UAE Space Agency is contributing to the realisation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The agency is using satellites to facilitate research on water and food scarcity, and mitigating climate change.

Led by Dr Ahmad Abdullah Humaid Bel Houl Al Falasi, Minister of State for Higher Education and Advanced Skills and chairman of the UAE Space Agency, a high-level UAE delegation is taking part in the event, which marks 50 years since the first Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

[NEWS] Recognise and actualise targets of SDG 5 in planning–MCE

Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive, has entreated governments to recognise the importance of Sustainable Development Goal five (SDG 5) in the actualisation of planning for development.

She, however, noted that within the context of delivering sustainable human settlements; Gender Equality must be strongly integrated into the achievement of Sustainable Cities and Towns, which is, Goal 11.

Mrs Assan was speaking at the European Development Day, a global partnership, established to promote and strengthen the role of cities in poverty reduction and sustainable development in Brussels, Belgium organised by Cities Alliance.

[NEWS] SDGs Youth World Cup

While the World Cup plays out in Russia, dozens of New York City children are set to play in a U.N.-sponsored youth version of the global soccer tournament.

It’s happening Saturday at the city’s Randalls Island park and is being organized by Monaco’s U.N. mission with help from the U.N. and city agencies.

The teams include 10-to-14-year-old boys and girls in city afterschool programs who will “represent” eight countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Morocco, Peru, South Korea, Russia and Senegal.

[NEWS] Open Letter to HLPF Calls for Urgent Water Action

國際水和發展機構向可持續發展高級別政治論壇(HLPF)發出公開信,呼籲聯合國系統和各國政府通過緊急水行動建立韌性。

International water and development agencies issued an open letter to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), calling on the UN system and governments to build resilience through urgent action on water.

The letter is meant to build momentum heading into the July 2018 session of the HLPF, which will review progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal on clean water and sanitation (SDG 6).

As of 6 June, 21 UN and other multilateral agencies, research organizations and NGOs had signed the letter.

[NEWS] ‘Budget protects tobacco companies rather than public health’

The government’s plan for controlling tobacco consumption is a plan without a road map, speakers at a program said on Saturday.

They alleged that the proposed budget for the coming fiscal year is safeguarding tobacco companies’ interests rather than ensuring public health and safety, which would also hinder achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the future.

A press conference on reactions to the tobacco VAT in the proposed budget for FY19 was organized by Progga and Anti-Tobacco media Alliance (ATMA) at the city’s Press Club on Saturday.

[NEWS] Misappropriation of Resources cause of Corruption in Education Sector

This was disclosed at a restitution meeting and awareness campaign on the research, organised by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) in collaboration with the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), with funding support from Transparency International.
